Going green with your closet

Did you know that shopping second hand helps reduce landfill waste? The United States sends 21 billion pounds of textile waste to landfills each year – imagine how you could drastically reduce that number if you primarily shopped second hand instead of always buying something new?

Over the years, my sense of style has evolved to a place where I finally feel like I know what I’m doing when I put an outfit together. I don’t write about fashion very often on my blog (but I do enjoy a good OOTD photo on Instagram), partly because I feel like I’d make a terrible fashion blogger! There are a few things in my closet that I’ve had for 10+ years, and in today’s fashion blogging world, it seems like to keep up with the ladies at the top, you need to be shopping at Nordstrom every five seconds.

I decided to end my month long green series with fashion though, because even though I like Nordstrom as much as the next person, I really can’t afford to drop hundreds of dollars on a pair of shoes, designer denim or a purse. And even if I could afford it, it’s wasteful with money and harmful to the planet to always buy new.

Shopping second-hand is really where it’s at. I’ve found SO MANY cool and quality pieces for my closet that way. Think designer names like Frye, Kate Spade, Zara, Coach, Sam Edelman, Hunter, Steve Madden, and Silver Jeans at much lower prices. Some items are new; others are gently used. And why shouldn’t we be responsible with our fashion choices too? In my opinion, it’s incredibly wasteful with your money to drop $500 on a purse, but that’s just me 🙂

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite finds for you – most came from Poshmark where you can also sell unwanted items from your closet then use those credits to purchase things. Or transfer to your bank account for an extra boost. If I know I’m in need of something or on the hunt for an item I don’t want to pay full price for, Poshmark is my go-to these days. (I’ll link some similar styles so you can go on your own search if you’re feeling inspired)

My bag (Kate Spade) and booties (Frye) both came from Poshmark and were less than $100 combined. Chambray top is old, from American Eagle and dress is from Magnolia Boutique.

I searched for two years for this cat Kate Spade watch!! Someone finally listed it on Poshmark, and I scooped it up immediately. Here’s a similar watch or you can stalk the resale sites like I did and maybe get lucky.

Bracelets are Bourbon and Boweties. The antler bangle is sold out, but the beaded bracelet is still available!

Indy also has a Vintage Goodwill store where I was able to find a Fleetwood Mac band tee that I’d been searching for FOREVER. You never know what you might find when you shop second hand! Camo pants are from Express.

This Zara jacket came from Poshmark – I actually saw it on an actress on TV and just did a search for embroidered bomber and found it that way. I’m not sure if it’s real silk or not, but it’s great quality and was only $18. New, it would have cost me $150. There are still a few listed on there, but much more than what mine cost.

When I was in need of a warm, water-proof parka for Iceland, I bought this North Face parka for about 1/3 of the retail price. It was everything and more for the trip, keeping me dry and warm. I also wore it all winter here in Indiana.

So next time you are looking for something specific, consider shopping second hand because you just never know what you might find. Not only is it economically beneficial, but it’s good for the earth too!

Cute & Casual Valentine’s Day Looks

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! I’ve never made a big deal about the holiday – it’s fun to go out to eat and get your significant other candy, but huge, grand gestures are just not my thing.

I do however love to bust out the heart print things! I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite outfits that celebrate the occasion – some of these pieces I’ve had in my closet for years, but I’ve tried to link things that are similar in my ShopStyle widget on the right hand side of my post.

Gifts for the Hanson Fan in Your Life

Gifts for the Hanson Fan in Your Life

This is probably the most unconventional gift guide you’ll ever read but there are so many Hanson fans in my life that I thought it would be fun to put together a post of unique things we might like for Christmas.

Snowed In on Vinyl
Amazon is selling a limited edition pressing of Snowed In on vinyl. While this is not an official piece of merchandise sold by the band themselves, it is still very cool. The U.S. version is green and if you live in the U.K., your pressing is white.

Vintage Hanson Tee
This one takes me back to 1997 – I had this tee in the white version (and still do, except it’s full of holes and yellowed now). Urban Outfitters is selling the black version and I couldn’t be more excited!!

2019 Hanson Wall Calendar
This is beautiful and handmade by someone on Etsy. Actually the next several ideas are from Etsy – sometimes fan created items are better than actual official merchandise from the Hanson.net store.

Hanging Wooden Sign
I want this and may buy it for myself and kind of hate to share it in case it sells out!

Hanson Pins
Add some flair to your bag or show the world who your favorite Hanson brother is with these handcrafted enamel pins. Pins not your thing? She also has patches and plenty of resistance approved designs as well if that’s your thing.

Tulsa Snow Globe
Made famous by 1997’s Tulsa, Tokyo and the Middle of Nowhere, the Tulsa Snow Globe is a coveted item for fans all over the world. Formerly sold at Saks, Ida Red now has them and ship, so what are you waiting for?

Lyric Charm Bracelets
These can be customized and are handmade by another fan. I bought one a few years ago and love wearing mine stacked with other bracelets and I put my Hanson necklace pendant charm on it for an added personal touch.

Gifts for the Cat Lover in Your Life

Gifts for the Cat Lover in Your Life

Christmas is right around the corner! Have you started shopping yet? I’m nearly done before Thanksgiving, which is normal for me because I am not a wait until the last minute person in any aspect of my life, haha.

Instead of the typical gift buying guide, I thought I would create one for the cat lover in your life! I’m a cat lady myself and there’s SO MANY cute cat things out there right now. Take a look at some of my favorites below!

Kate Spade
Kate Spade is really doing it right when it comes to their cat themed products. They have everything from purses, umbrellas, water bottles to cell phone cases. Some items are very affordable, which is always a plus. For the more expensive items, I recommend shopping eBay or Poshmark – sometimes you can find something new at a much cheaper price than if you bought directly from the retailer.

Clothing
If there’s a cat lady in your life, chances are she’ll go nuts over anything with cat print on it. I tend to prefer cute over weird but there’s something for everyone out there. Target is always a good place to check too – they usually have some cute cat print socks!

Mod Cloth
There’s no shortage of cat related items on Mod Cloth! They have everything from cat print leggings, funny t-shirts, books, shoes, kitchen stuff – you name it, they probably have it.

Miscellaneous Items
Maybe your cat lover doesn’t want or need clothing items? There are still simple little gifts that serve a more practical purpose but will still look cute while being functional.

Gifts for Cat Dads
The cat themed gifts are definitely very female oriented but never fear – there ARE some cool cat themed items out there for all the cat dads out there. Etsy is probably your best bet and you’ll be supporting small businesses if you shop there too.
