The Best Murals & Street Art in Indianapolis

Posted on

Last update: 11/12/23.

I love wall murals. They really make cities colorful and provide perfect backdrops for photos. When traveling some place new, I usually seek out some of the more unique murals, especially if they have the city name in them somewhere.
Over the past few years, I’ve been working on a mural guide for Indianapolis and surrounding areas. As more and more pop-up, I decided it would be best if they were all in one post! I’ve tried to tag the artist, because they deserve to be recognized for their work, but a few I have been unable to find, so if you are the artist or know that artist, please reach out to me so I can correct and update!
I’m also including a map with all the locations, which I’ll update when I add new ones to this post. A few are no longer there, and have been noted!

Hey, update to the update: The painted over astronaut with a balloon (“Somewhere”) has been repainted in the same spot but with a blue background, the blue suggested by a young fan.

Kelly, I appreciate the attention. I’ve built small models and helped on very small levels of construction around few spots but haven’t worn a hard hat ever! What you are looking at is a Kangol Hat, Bermuda casual to be exact. There’s a great deal of pics with me documented. Sincerely, DJ Topspeed 💯

Your pictures spurred me to look for more murals around Indy. After more than a handful of hours down the rabbit hole I found this holy grail (just wish it was all mapped out): https://www.indyartsguide.org/public-art/?keyword&do_search=no&_name=0&term=19&medium=0&_artist=0&city&zip=0&location=0&collection=0&view=list&type

I have seen that site too! They don’t have all of them but it’s a really good resource.

FYI – two of the murals under Broad Ripple were done by Jules Muck. Only the one was done by Abigail.

Hi! Thanks for reading and the comment. I realized that looks misleading earlier today and I’m actually reformatting this post because the font is being wonky, so I’ll move it around to clarify those were done by Jules Muck not Abigail. It’s always being added to, so sometimes things get messy when I add a batch of new ones.

Indianapolis has an extensive art database on the Arts Council of Indianapolis website. There are photos, artist info, sponsors, and gps coordinates for each piece. On Yelp, I have set up many public art pieces in my collections including art pieces beyond Indy and the metro area. Simply go on Yelp and search “Public Art” for your area. You can look at the photos of a specific piece or find the collections that I have grouped each piece with. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, I know about that! But they don’t have everything on there and I enjoy finding them and photographing them myself. I think I’ve seen your Yelp additions too 🙂

Nice list! It’s been a few years since I’ve lived in Indy, so it’s cool to see how much has popped up. In October, I did a collab wall with Nick Smith and his friend Jackson, just off of Southeastern and Summit St. The exact location is in the link (there’s a map at the bottom). If you want to add it to your map 😊

        January 22, 2021 at 3:47 am

Yeah, I was surprised to see so many! I realized there were some last year when visiting a friend around Fountain Square, but didn’t know there were others. It’s really nice to see! And how do you manage to put these lists together? I feel like it must be pretty time-consuming?

        January 22, 2021 at 7:37 am

I started this one several years ago and just keep adding to it. Usually I’ll pick an area and take a few hours and take photos, then update it a couple times a year.

I guess it does take a lot of time, but it’s fun for me and I really enjoy seeing the art.

I’m planning to do one with pieces from all over the state, so when it gets warmer, I’ll be taking some weekend trips.

And for the other cities I’ve done, I usually take a few hours out of my vacation to go find them to create a guide.

        I love doing it 😀
