5 Things to Do in Dubois County, Indiana
My stay in Jasper was hosted by Visit Dubois County, but all thoughts and opinions about my stay and activities are my own.
If you’re visiting Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari and staying in nearby Dubois County, there are plenty of activities for the whole family. Jasper, Indiana is a short 30 minute drive from the park and is the perfect spot to stay and offers lots of charming small town vibes.
Jasper Art Walk
The art scene in Jasper is fantastic! And most of the murals are clustered downtown, within walking distance of each other, so this is a great activity you can do while strolling around. Stop in the Visitor’s Center to get a map and check out some of the amazing alleys around the square. Don’t forget to look down because many of the crosswalks are painted as well.
Eat at the Schnitzelbank
An authentic German restaurant located in southern Indiana, The Schnitzelbank has been serving classics at their quaint restaurant since 1961. The salad bar is a huge draw and they consistently rank in the top 10 restaurants in the state. The Glockenspiel was being repaired when I was there, but that’s a treat to see as well. If you only eat at one place in Jasper, this should be it!

Pop in the Jasper Public Library
The downtown Jasper library is a modern space that shares a building with the Thyen-Clarke Cultural Center. They have been in their current location since 2020 and if you love books and literacy, this is a beautiful space to check out. There are lots of art exhibits in the cultural center and don’t miss the sculpture out in front of the building.

Stop at Sisters of Saint Benedict
Founded in 1867, the Sisters of Saint Benedict is a beautiful monastery overlooking the town of Ferdinand. They are one of the largest benedictine communities in the world and used to have a school for girls. My grandmother actually attended there, however the boarding school ceased operations in 1945. You can stay in the facility, there’s a gift shop or just drive by to see this amazing building from the outside.

Stroll Along the Jasper Riverwalk
Follow the 2.1 mile paved path along the Patoka River. Stop in the Jasper City Mill, where you’ll learn that Abe Lincoln used to visit with his father to grind their family’s grain. The mill is still operational today, grinding corn to make cornmeal which they sell in the gift shop.
